Once one of the first names on the team sheet under Eddie Howe’s Newcastle revival, Sean Longstaff now finds himself at a career crossroads. At 27, with one year left on his contract, he is watching the club he grew up in evolve past him. With Longstaff clearly being sixth choice, the question isn’t whether he will leave, but where he belongs.
As the summer transfer window opens again, three Premier League clubs are reportedly interested but which team needs his talents the most?
⚽ What Longstaff Brings to the Pitch
Longstaff may not dazzle on highlight reels, but his value lies elsewhere, hard running, timing his runs into the box, and a willingness to cover ground that gives others space to flourish. At his best, he offers a real goal threat, scoring 7 goals in the 23/24 season, even if his finishing can let him down at times.
His limitations? He’s not a line-breaking dribbler. Nor does he possess the vision or range of passing of someone like Bruno Guimarães. But in the right setup, with defined responsibilities and a balanced midfield trio, Longstaff can be quietly essential.
🛑 Newcastle: No Longer His Team?
With Tonali showing his class after his suspension, Joelinton continuing his evolution, Bruno untouchable, and Lewis Miley emerging, Longstaff’s game time has dwindled. While Eddie Howe continues to praise his professionalism, he also admits “Sean’s long-term future is a bit more uncertain than some others.”
And that uncertainty has triggered interest from clubs in need of Premier League proven grit.
🔵 Everton
Suitability: ★★★★★
David Moyes has identified Longstaff as the type of player who brings “mentality and a good engine”. After a large departure of senior players this summer, Everton are in need of numbers and the reasonable value Longstaff offers (a transfer fee of £10m is reported to be enough) brings in a proven PL player with plenty of money left for the more classy players.
His ability to shuttle between boxes would complement Moyes’s often conservative shape, giving Everton a transition player who protects the back four and links play without needing to dominate the spotlight.
⚪ Leeds United
Suitability: ★★★★☆
Promoted under Daniel Farke, Leeds needs players who know what Premier League survival battles feel like. Longstaff has been there. At Elland Road, he could be an everyday starter, offering the defensive legs and experience to support younger talent.
Farke likes midfielders who run, press, and work in pairs. Longstaff’s stamina and discipline make him a natural fit for a two-man pivot, especially when Leeds needs to hold onto leads or press in bursts.
🟣 Burnley
Suitability: ★★★☆☆
Sean Longstaff could be a solid fit for Burnley, especially under Scott Parker. He’s hardworking, covers loads of ground, and brings the kind of grit Parker loves in a midfielder. While not the most creative, his energy and discipline would suit Parker’s structured style. Pair him with a playmaker, and he could thrive.
Burnley were woeful when they were last in the Premier League so Sean would have to be ready for a tough season. He’s shown before with Newcastle that he can be the man to step up in tough times.
🧭 Verdict: Where Should He Go?
If Longstaff wants to play regularly, build rhythm, and still prove he can be a Premier League difference maker, Everton is the ideal spot. Moyes would know how to use him, no frills, all function. If he can recapture his form of two seasons ago, he could easily replace the goals from midfield Everton have lost this summer and become a well liked player amongst the fans.
