Noah Atubolu – A clever continental alternative to James Trafford

With Newcastle United reportedly considering a £30 – £40m move for James Trafford, there’s growing logic in asking whether that outlay is really necessary. One lesser-known name who offers a more cost-effective and arguably more polished alternative is Noah Atubolu, Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper and rising star for Germany’s U21s.

Freiburg’s quiet evolution

Atubolu, 23, has spent over a decade developing within Freiburg’s system and stepped up to the senior XI this season following Mark Flekken’s move to Brentford. Rather than buying in a replacement, Freiburg handed the gloves to Atubolu, and he rewarded that faith.

In his 26 Bundesliga appearances this season:

  • He conceded 37 goals from 37.0 PSxG, indicating no over- or underperformance
  • Logged a 69.2% save rate, broadly solid
  • Kept clean sheets in 40% of his matches (91st percentile across top five leagues)
  • And stopped 9% of crosses faced – 88th percentile, showing composure under pressure, and dominance of his area.

He’s not flashy, but he’s reliable. No major errors. No wild swings in form. Just good, clean, efficient keeping.

Calm in possession, strong distribution

On of the standout features of Atubolu’s game is his assurance with the ball at his feet. Freiburg have encouraged him to build short and stay composed under pressure – and it shows:

  • Touches per 90: 46.7 (96th percentile)
  • Passes attempted (GK): 39.5 (95th percentile)
  • Launch %: Just 32.2% (50th percentile) I.e., he prefers to play short when possible
  • Passes completed (launched): 6.2% (85th percentile)

In other words, his passing is well-rounded, capable of playing short, controlled options to feet and being heavily involved in the build-up play, but also capable of going long when needed.

Germany’s trusted number 1 at U21 level

Atubolu has amassed 19 caps for Germany’s U21s, establishing himself as the first-choice in his age group. He has started 2 out of the 3 matches at this summer’s U21 Euros, only sitting out the final group game (a 2-1 win over England) after qualification was secured. He is expected to return between the sticks in Sunday’s QF against Italy.

Style of play and suitability

So, he’s a canny enough shot-stopper, technically secure, dominates his box, and composed in his build-up play.

But he’s not a natural sweeper keeper

  • Sweeper keeper actions per 90: 1.09 (52nd percentile)
  • Avg. defensive action distance: 12.7m (27th percentile)

That could well be an issue behind a high line, especially considering our current back four are not blessed with pace. If Burn, Schar, or Botman are caught too high, Altubolu may not cover the space as well as a more aggressive sweeper keeper like Trafford.

Trafford vs Atubolu – two U21 leaders, two different price tags

Both Trafford and Atubolu boast U21 international pedigree, and have experience in a top 5 European league. However, there are some crucial differences:

  • Trafford struggled in the Premier League in a poor Burnley side whose centre halves offered minimal protection before having a stellar second season, albeit in the Championship. His domestic stock is high, with a fee to match.
  • Atubolu played well above expectations in a higher-level league for a team who ultimately qualified for Europe finishing 5th in the Bundesliga last time out. With 2 years left on his contract he could be available for around £15-£20m

Final word: scout smart, not just English

If Newcastle United want a long-term successor to Nick Pope who will also evolve our style of play, is reliable under pressure, has a wide range of passing and has a high ceiling for progression, Noah Atubolu makes perfect sense.

He may not be as well known in England, as box-office as some expect James Trafford to become, but I think he could be the smarter, more mature and certainly better value option – especially if we add more pace into our backline.
