Match preview: Newcastle United vs Fulham – time to build momentum

After a dominant 3–0 win over Benfica, Newcastle United return to Premier League action at St James’ Park looking to turn midweek rhythm into domestic momentum.

Tuesday’s performance had everything that had been missing at Brighton, energy, control, belief and composure. Two words summed it up: maturity and intensity. Now comes the test of consistency. Fulham’s visit offers the chance to consolidate form and start climbing the league table before a tough November schedule.

Recent form & head-to-head

Newcastle come into this one on the back of an outstanding Champions League night, but domestic form remains mixed. Fulham, meanwhile, are inconsistent, struggling away from home but dangerous on the counter when given space.

The recent record between the sides leans heavily in Newcastle’s favour: six wins, two draws and two defeats in the last ten Premier League meetings. Though of course, Fulham did the double over Newcastle United twice last season, roundly thrashing us 3-1 at Craven Cottage before coming to St James’ Park in January and beating us 2-1. Vengeance will be on our mind as we look to right that wrong in a fixture we’ve dominated for quite some time.

Team news & possible line-ups

Newcastle United

Doubtful:

  • Sandro Tonali (illness) – Trained midweek but not fully recovered; described by Howe as “touch and go.”

Out:

  • Yoane Wissa (knee) – Still some weeks away.
  • Lewis Hall (hamstring) – Back on grass, likely available early November.
  • Tino Livramento (knee) – Making good progress but not ready.

Fulham

Out:

  • Joachim Andersen (hamstring)
  • Antonee Robinson (thigh)
  • Rodrigo Muniz (ankle)
  • Samuel Chukwueze (calf)

Doubtful:

  • Harry Wilson (knock)

Fulham’s defensive issues could see Calvin Bassey return to the side to partner Cuenca, while young prospect Josh King has looked a handful and may feature as injuries bite this thin Fulham squad.

Predicted line-ups

What did Eddie say

On Benfica:

“It was a welcome performance and result the other night. It puts us in a good position in the Champions League and gives us a good feeling going into Saturday.”

On Tonali:

“Sandro trained on Wednesday but didn’t feel 100%. He’s the one that’s probably touch and go for the game. What I’d say is he’s been brilliant since coming back — the way he handled that difficult period, how he’s conducted himself, and now signing that extension shows his mentality and commitment.”

On Ramsey:

“I’ve been really pleased with JJ. Coming to a new club, the last thing you want is an early injury. He’s worked hard to come back to full fitness and impressed since returning. There’s still more to come both physically and technically.”

On Fulham:

“We’ll need our very best performance. They’re a strong side and Marco’s done a brilliant job there. These are difficult games for us. Coming off a Champions League night into a Saturday afternoon is always a big mental challenge, we have to rise to it.”

On Woltemade:

“That was his best physical performance against Benfica. His pressing from the front, his attitude, excellent. He looks more at home now and his personality is coming through. It’s all very positive.”

On Nick Pope:

“The two saves he made the other night were outstanding. He finds a way to keep the ball out, that’s his biggest strength. He’s very valuable to us and has the full respect of the dressing room.”

On maintaining consistency:

“It’s all down to mentality. There’s no difference between a Champions League game and a Premier League game in terms of attitude. We need that consistency and the will to win in every game.”

On Anthony Gordon:

“Anthony was direct, full of running, produced a goal and an assist, I was really pleased with his performance. The challenge for him now is consistency, because if he performs like that every week, there are very few that can do what he can do.”

Tactical preview & key battles

Wide areas:
Gordon and Murphy will look to continue their midweek exploits and take advantage of a makeshift Fulham back line. Expect to see Gordon drifting centrally to combine with Bruno and Woltemade.

Midfield control:
If Bruno and Tonali (or Miley) dominate Berge and Cairney, Newcastle can control possession and sustain pressure. Expect Joelinton to return to add some physical steel to overrun their midfield.

Transitions:
Howe will expect aggression when the ball turns over. Benfica’s lesson was clear, win the individual battles, dominate the tempo.

Prediction & what to expect

This is a test of mentality as much as quality. The atmosphere will be expectant, maybe even a little flat, after Tuesday, but it’s all about getting on top early, seizing the momentum and giving the crowd something to get behind.

Fulham will be stubborn, physical and organised, but Newcastle’s intensity, movement and rediscovered sharpness should be enough to break them down.

Prediction: Newcastle United 2–0 Fulham
Expecting glimmers of consistency from this side and another mature, intense performance where we control the ball and win comfortably.
