Match preview: Brighton vs Newcastle – can the Magpies break the Amex hoodoo?

Saturday sees us back in Premier League action, and what better way to kick off than a trip to the south coast. Brighton’s never been the easiest place to go, and recent history suggests the Amex is not a particularly happy hunting ground for the Toon. United, though, travel in better spirits, having won back-to-back games for the first time this season before the international break and hoping momentum can carry them forward.

This one feels like a test of character as much as quality: can Howe’s side go away from home, start confidently, impose their plan, and not let Brighton’s home rhythm unsettle them?

Recent form & head-to-head

Newcastle head into this on the back of wins over Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest before the international break. Brighton, by contrast, have been patchy, a mix of draws and defeats in their opening run of fixtures, with a last-minute Jan Paul van Hecke equaliser required to salvage a draw against Wolves in their last outing.

As for us at the Amex? We haven’t won there since both clubs were promoted in 2017. Eight games without a victory on that turf, it’s become a stubborn bit of ground to break, though we don’t subscribe to the daft notions of “bogey” teams.

But regardless, there’s narrative weight here: a ground we struggle at, a Brighton side trying to assert, and a Newcastle United trying to establish some momentum following a stuttering, stop-start early season run.

Team news & possible line-ups

Newcastle United

Injuries / doubts:

  • Yoane Wissa remains out.
  • Lewis Hall is unavailable.
  • Lewis Miley is a doubt after withdrawing from the England U21s with a minor issue.
  • Will Osula is nursing a slight ankle injury and is not 100% training

Returns / optimism:

  • Jacob Ramsey is expected to be fit again and could feature.
  • Dan Burn, despite a broken hand sustained in the win against Forest, is available for selection.
  • Despite reports of a groin problem sustained on international duty, Joelinton should be available for selection.

With a midweek Champions League fixture against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica looming, Howe may well choose to rotate for this one.

Predicted lineup:

What did Eddie say

On Ramsey
“JJ trained during the break and looked good. Pleased with where he is currently. He is fit and available for the weekend”

On Wissa
“We’ve seen Yoane back on the grass…and his knee has reacted pretty well to that work. So, it’ll now be the case of trying to step him up gradually”

On Lewis Hall
“The second scan was good news…we hope he will be back during the next period of games we have before the next international break.”

On Osula
“Will is nursing a slight ankle injury at the minute so he’s not 100% training”

On Joelinton
“It was suggested that he came back with a slight problem with his groin but he has assured us that he’s OK.”

On Woltemade’s start to his NUFC career
“Whenever you sign a player for that kind of transfer fee…there’s a belief that we think he can be a really good player for us, and a belief that we think he can perform and make a difference. He’s been excellent at coming into a new league with all the change that comes with that, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well…It looks like he really loves being here with his teammates and from that side of things, his teammates appreciated him really quickly as well.”

On new Sporting Director, Ross Wilson
“I’ve known Ross for a number of years…he’s someone who has been around the game for a long time, in various jobs and has done really well. But, of course, it’ll be interesting to see how our relationship develops. First impressions of him and his work is very good…I wasn’t totally out of the process [of appointing Wilson] but not heavily involved. I back Ross’ appointment and hope we can work together really well and bring further success.”

On whether discussions have started on new contracts for Tino, Tonali and Botman
“Not as far as I know…These conversations will all be led by Ross.”

Maybe next time our local journalists will think to ask some questions on our upcoming opponents…

Tactical preview & key battles

Brighton’s style vs our counters

Historically, Brighton teams have sought to dominate the ball, but young German manager Fabian Hurzeler has sought to evolve Brighton to a more direct style of play. On their home patch, they’ll expect to control possession, so United’s plan will hinge on being compact, disciplined, winning the ball back high and early as well as being lightning quick in transition. Gordon, Elanga and Murphy offer pace and directness on the break, that’s our route to success.

Key match-ups:

  • Bruno & Tonali vs Brighton’s midfield: controlling tempo will be essential. Lose that battle and Brighton dictate the rhythm.
  • Trippier and Burn vs Brighton’s tricky wingers: with both Hall and Livramento on the sidelines, United’s ageing fullback pairing may well have their hands full with constant overloads and direct running from the likes of former Magpie Yankuba Minteh and Brajan Gruda; discipline and communication are vital.
  • Nick Woltemade: getting Woltemade involved in the game early and often will be vital.
  • Second balls and duels: Brighton are strong physically; we can’t afford to be passive.
  • Transitions: whichever side reacts faster to turnovers will shape the game’s flow.

Prediction & what to expect

It feels like a cagey, tactical encounter. Brighton will likely enjoy more of the ball; we’ll look to frustrate and spring forward. The longer it stays level, the more chance we have of nicking it.

Prediction: Brighton 1–1 Newcastle. Even a point here would be a solid return and another step toward that top-six rhythm.
